Weather

What it's about

The weather widget shows the forecast for where you live – with an individual override if you're somewhere other than the rest of the household.

Why it's here

“Does your child need a jacket tomorrow?” is answered most honestly when the weather sits right in the app, next to the calendar. But your household's home isn't always where you actually are. Anyone commuting, staying at the weekend house, or on a business trip wants the weather for where they wake up – not necessarily where “the household” is registered.

How it works

By default, the weather uses your household's home. In your profile, you can override this – enter your own city (by search, with a coordinate fallback). That applies only to you; everyone else keeps seeing the household default, unless they override it too. The forecast covers 7 days, including high and low temperatures and chance of rain.

Weather at an event

If you enter a real address with a postcode for an event – “Kirchweg 7, 83022 Rosenheim”, say – you can also show the weather there, handy for “do I need a jacket for the outing?”. patchio deliberately does not send the full address to the weather service, only the city extracted from it (here: “Rosenheim”) – street, house number and postcode stay with patchio.

For plain free text like “Kitchen” or “Sports hall”, patchio deliberately doesn't offer this: a weather service would otherwise hit some place of the same name, somewhere in the world – and wrong weather is worse than none. That's the same rule that decides the directions button on an event. If there's no postcode in the location – just street and house number, “Kirchweg 7, Rosenheim”, say – you still won't get a weather button: the weather service doesn't understand street addresses, only city names, and without a postcode the city can't be resolved reliably enough. The directions button for the same address isn't affected by this.

Unlike your weather location, patchio also doesn't load the weather for an event automatically: an event location could be someone else's address, and that shouldn't go to an external weather service without being asked. So you first see only a button, “Show weather (sends city)”. Only once you tap it does patchio fetch the weather for the city from that location – after that, it stays put, even as you keep scrolling.

In practice

Say your household is set in Kassel, but you commute to Frankfurt during the week – set Frankfurt as your weather location in your profile. Everyone else in the household still sees Kassel; you see Frankfurt.
