Using patchio offline

Using patchio offline

No signal? patchio keeps going. In a Tube tunnel, in the supermarket basement or on a plane, the app shows you the last loaded state of your key areas – and anything you get done on the way, it catches up on by itself later.

What you can see offline

As long as you've opened the area once before with a connection, you'll see it offline too – as it stood at the last load:

  • your calendar
  • your tasks and points
  • your shopping lists
  • who's home (who's where right now)
  • your health day (Today)
  • the directory and the emergency card
  • your loyalty cards, ready to show at the till

Anything you've never opened with a connection, patchio can't conjure up offline – that area stays empty until you're back online.

What you can do offline

A few things work without a connection too – they're remembered and sent later:

  • ticking off tasks (and routines/doses in the health area)
  • adding, ticking off and deleting shopping items
  • recording individual events

These changes show up in the app straight away, but carry a small circling-arrows mark for “syncing” until they're sent the next time you have a connection.

What doesn't work offline

Some things need the internet and will say so, gently: “Doesn't work offline – try again once you're back online.”

  • uploading photos and files (profile pictures, receipts, documents)
  • sending invitations
  • creating repeating events (single events work offline, repeats don't)
  • anything to do with your subscription (buying, managing)

How syncing works

As soon as your device has a connection again, patchio sends your offline changes automatically – in the order you made them. It then reloads the affected areas fresh, so you see the current state everywhere. You don't need to press anything.

The circling-arrows mark on an entry disappears once that change has been sent. If a change simply won't go through after several tries, patchio drops it rather than blocking the whole queue.

And if the server rejects a change – say, because you're not actually allowed to delete that entry, or your access is no longer active – patchio now tells you: a red notice at the top (“… couldn't be saved”) asking you to reload the page. Before, a change like that would vanish silently, and the app kept showing your version instead of the real one.

The offline banner

A quiet notice appears under the header when you're looking at a mirrored state:

  • “Offline – state from 14:32” means: you're seeing the last loaded state, from that time. If it's older than that, the day is shown too – “yesterday, 14:32” or “18/07, 14:32” – so you don't mistake a day-old state for today's.
  • Back online, but changes are still waiting to be sent? The banner briefly shows “Syncing…” and disappears once everything's through.

No banner means: everything you see is freshly loaded.
