Subjects and clubs
Subjects and clubs
The “Subjects” tab lists all of a child's subjects and clubs – with colour, short code, teacher and room. Whatever you create here shows up everywhere else in the School module: in the timetable, on the dates, in the grades and in the overview. The basic list usually comes from the setup assistant; this is where you maintain it afterwards.
Whoever has the “Manage school” permission can change the list, and so can the child for their own profile. Everyone else can only view it.
Subject or club?
The page splits things into two groups:
- Subjects get grades. Only for them can you enter assessments, and only they have an average.
- Clubs & activities – choir, chess club, homework club – appear in the timetable but don't get grades. In the timetable's subject bar and on “Today”, they carry a “Club” label.
Creating or changing a subject
“Add subject” opens the dialog; tapping an existing subject opens it for editing.
- Name and Short code – the short code (up to six characters, such as “M” or “Bio”) appears in the coloured box in front of the subject. Without one, patchio uses the first two letters of the name.
- Type – “Subject (gets grades)” or “Club / activity (no grades)”.
- Colour – a new subject automatically gets a colour that isn't taken yet. The colour helps you spot it quickly in the timetable.
- Teacher and Room – both optional. The room is the subject's default room: it appears in the timetable for every lesson of this subject, unless you enter a different one for a single lesson.
- How do the grades add up? and Year grade – subjects only. This is where you set how patchio calculates the average. The suggestion matches the federal state and school type; what the options mean is explained under “Tests, class tests & grades”.
Archive rather than delete
If a subject is dropped, archive it with “Archive” in the dialog. It then disappears from the list and is no longer offered when you fill in the timetable or enter an assessment. Its dates and grades stay – you'll still find them on the Grades tab, marked “archived” – and lessons already in the timetable stay there until you remove them. “Show archived” brings archived subjects back into the list, and “Restore” makes one active again.
Deleting only works for a subject with no dates or grades attached yet – for example, if you made a typo when creating it. If it already has some, patchio tells you and offers “Archive instead”. That way, no grade gets lost.
New school year
Next to “Add subject” is “New school year”, along with the school year currently entered. Once a year, you use it to update the class and subjects: whatever is dropped gets archived, new ones are added. How it works in detail is under “New school year: update when it's time”.
